Public Safety – Emergency Services

Todays UAVs are widely used in variety of application. Although, it may seem that the most widespread is millitary use, we at Aerial-Drones believe in greater potential in Public Safety and Emergency Response sectors.

Air support is crucial in many crisis situations, but in some cases, conventional helicopters may be unnecessarily expensive and slow. Also, emergencies don’t always happen on calm sunny days, while UAS systems can operate reliably in extreme wind and weather conditions including safe flight in sustained winds up to 50 km/h (30 mph).

Applications which UAVs are ideal for:

Raids, barricades and hostage situations are surely the most dangerous operations for police forces. In such situations, an aerial perspective can help officers see over obstacles and around corners to gain critical situational awareness without putting themselves in any danger.
Proper traffic accident investigation requires balance between two competing demands – the requirement for thorough, lasting evidence and the need to reopen roads as soon as possible. Drones provide aerial visual materials the same quality as conventional aircraft but with a significantly faster response time which is beneficial for shortening any road closures.
Solving crimes and ultimately convicting criminals requires the latest in forensics techniques. The most difficult thing in forensics is to capture evidence from a crime scene without actually touching the crime scene itself. Using drones for such purposes allows us to gather evidence even before the arrival of detectives and other specialist resources.
In this type of incident, time is of the essence. Successful result of the operation depends on how fast search and rescue efforts commence. Conventional helicopters require longer time to take off, while drones can take off in just a few minutes. Also, pre-planned flight paths allow the operator to methodically perform a grid search in a given area to ensure no area is missed. All videos and photographs can be automatically saved and geo-tagged for further analysis and potential evidence.
Emergency response presents another application of UAVs which reduces the risks for the officers or people involved. When an emergency call occurs, the dispatched officer has but little knowledge of the situation. Officers are required to investigate the situation not knowing what specific dangers await them. Sending UAVs in advance can dramatically reduce officer risk.
Large crowds such as demonstrations, festivals or sport event’s, can get out of control and it can happen really quickly. While land units have limited monitoring ability, continuous surveillance of the crowd is highly valued to provide officers a visual overview of how the situation is evolving. In such cases there is no need to use expensive helicopters that attract attention.
Chemical, biological, radioactive, nuclear or explosive situations represent an extreme danger to all officers involved. Especially in these cases, it is crucial to gather information about the situation before sending human officers to the place.
Investigating damage done by fire can be quite dangerous operation. Evaluating structure safety and looking for remaining hot spots need to be done instantly, before sending in investigation and clean-up crews. In such cases, copters equipped with thermocamera are the best choice as the video and photographic evidence for ongoing investigation should be acquired without touching the damaged site. The size of the copters also allow the fire fighters search indoor spaces without taking any risk at all.
